Volunteers

The volunteers who operate the Food Closet are from our sponsoring churches. Through our volunteers, we foster a sense of community caring and concern for our clients’ welfare as well as opportunities for faith-based people to offer compassionate service.

Currently, we have about 150 active volunteers operating the Food Closet. There is a work crew for each day that typically consists of 8 to 10 workers. There is a leader identified for each day’s team. Duties performed by the team include checking in clients, verifying eligibility, distributing refrigerated and dry goods to clients, and keeping the Food Closet facilities clean. Behind the scenes, other volunteers sort donated food, purchase certain types of food, glean at some of our contributing stores, maintain the facility, or volunteer on one of our committees.  New volunteers attend an orientation session to educate them about Food Closet basics before they start their work. About 1000 hours of volunteer work are donated each month.

If you are a member of one of our sponsoring churches and wish to volunteer for service at the Food Closet, contact the volunteer coordinator at your church.

Each person who drives on behalf of the Food Closet must submit a Volunteer Vehicle Insurance Form annually.
